Such were the findings of a research team from Penn State at University Park and the College of Medicine.
According to co-author Penny Kris-Etherton, distinguished professor of nutritional sciences at Penn State:
"Consumption of whole grains has been associated with a lower body weight and lower blood pressure. We thought that incorporating whole grains into a heart-healthy weight loss diet may provide the same benefits to people at risk from chronic diseases."
Whole grains are heart-healthy food. In this particular study, a high whole grain diet has been found to decrease in C-reactive protein levels in the blood by 38 percent.
C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory marker that at high level has long been knows to put patients at an increased risk for diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Remember to opt for whole grain foods and food products instead.
