Filed in archive News , Treatment on July 31, 2007
A product of Sanofi-aventis - Lantus® (insulin glargine [rDNA origin] injection) - is the only 24-hour insulin approved exclusively for use once a day, for the treatment of hyperglycemia in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
Now a new, disposable insulin pen prefilled with Lantus® - SoloSTAR® - is now available in the U.S., as announced by Sanofi-aventis, allowing patients to administer doses from 1 up to 80 units, in one injection.
According to Stephen N. Davis M.D., FRCP, Mark Collie Professor of Medicine, Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, Chief of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Vanderbilt University:
"Lantus® has been proven to help lower blood sugar levels and can help patients reach their goals. Now, with the addition of the Lantus® SoloSTAR® pen, patients will find that the new pen is easy to use and will make Lantus® delivery even more convenient."
Introduced in France and Germany in 2007, Lantus® SoloSTAR® is also available in Australia and is expected to be introduced in other countries in the near future.
