Smoking Really Blows, Especially For Diabetics
Filed in archive Research on April 11, 2006
As though the threat of lung cancer, emphysema, and early death aren't enough to scare you, recent studies have shown that smoking damages
your health in yet another way: increasing the chances of developing, and worsening existing cases of, diabetes.
Glucose intolerance is often a direct route to developing diabetes, and is the area that concerns researchers:
Researchers found a direct correlation between tobacco exposure and the development of glucose intolerance, with 22 percent of smokers developing the condition.
More bad news: the danger isn't only present for smokers; it also affects those around them, making second-hand smoke nearly as dangerous as smoking.
If you're a diabetic looking to quit smoking, or would like to help someone do this, there are many resources available. The Tobacco Information and Prevention Source (TIPS) website offers excellent tips on how to quit, as well as incentives.
There has never been a better time to kick smoking's butt.
