Prevent Or Improve Type 2 Diabetes During The Holidays
Filed in archive Information on December 24, 2006
Ah, the holidays! As they approach, we begin to feel nervous. Is there a more difficult time for a diabetic? This article provides helpful tips and information regarding Type 2 diabetes, and how to arm yourself during the holidays.
The food-centric holiday season is a time of temptation for all of us, and it poses particular challenges for those at risk of developing diabetes. Many readers have asked me: "Can diabetes be prevented?"
There is no evidence that you can prevent Type 1 diabetes, but Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed with lifestyle changes. That's good news, because about 90 percent of all diabetes cases are classified as Type 2. The American Diabetes Association estimates that 54 million Americans have pre-diabetes. "With modest changes in diet and exercise, diabetes can be prevented or significantly delayed," says Idie Clement, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator at Piedmont Hospital's Diabetes Resource Center.
"The most important thing people can do to prevent diabetes is to know their blood sugar levels. After an overnight fast, your blood sugar should be less than 100 milligrams per deciliter of blood; if it is between 100 and 125, you've got pre-diabetes," adds Clement.
Have a healthy and happy holiday season.
