Sometimes, you just need a story that makes you smile. Watching people work to improve the lives of diabetics will do that. Especially if those people seem, well...a bit crazy.
New Year's Day is just around the corner it's time to hunt down your favorite swimsuit, those haggard sandals your friends make fun of you for wearing and the biggest beach towel you can find for Atlantic General Hospital's coldest fundraiser
, the 13th Annual Penguin Swim.Between 400-500 people participated in the swim last year enduring a recorded water temperature of 45 degrees. Their ages ranged anywhere from as young as 2 years old to 61 years old and by the end of the day had raised approximately $60,000 for AGH.
According to Cheryl Nottingham, AGH's Financial Officer, the Penguin Swim has raised over $750,000 since its inception. The funds, which are unrestricted to the AGH Foundation, have been invested toward services and equipment that have benefited the community over the years.
Mike Franklin, AGH's President/CEO, said the event is critical to AGH.
"From a local perspective it brings together community support for services in the region," he said. "It really helps us strengthen those services the community needs."
Franklin said the money raised from this year's Penguin Swim would go toward supporting a diabetes research program that will look into controlling diabetes and educate the public as well.
Brrr! Good job, 'penguins!'
