One Out Of Every 523 American Children Has Diabetes
The first nationwide study of diabetic children and teens of all ethnic groups has found a number to attach to the alarming trend of diabetes: 523.

The study uncovered more surprising facts:

"We now know that diabetes in youth definitely varies across the major ethnic groups in the United States," she says. "And we know that, in children under the age of 10, non-Hispanic white children actually carry the greatest burden of diabetes."

In children from 10 to 19, both non-Hispanic whites and African-American children are most likely to have the disease.
"This study addresses an important gap in our knowledge, providing national estimates on the prevalence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children," said Dr. Judith Fradkin, director of the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease.

Scientists hope that this study will lead to improved research and treatment of diabetes in children.
