New Data Supports Spleen Cell 'Cure' For Type 1 Diabetes
Filed in archive Research on November 29, 2006
Based on extensive research with the spleen cells of mice, researchers are convinced they may have found the answer to 'Curing'--or at least improving--Type 1 diabetes. Opinions differ on this, as expressed in different journals and newspapers the last few months, but new data has given rise to hope.
Three studies from other institutions published in the March 24, 2006 issue of Science confirmed that the MGH-developed protocol can reverse the underlying disease but were inconclusive on the role of spleen cells in the recovery of insulin-producing pancreatic islets. The new data from a study performed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), published as a technical comment, provides additional confirmation of the ability to reverse type 1 diabetes and on the role of the spleen cells in islet regeneration.
Will the procedure be as effective in humans as it is in mice? Only time will tell. Would you be willing to undergo this procedure?
