Both oral blood glucose lowering drugs, glipizide and metformin are used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes when diet alone is not sufficient, but with different mechanisms of action: glipizide by stimulating the pancreas to secrete insulin and helping the body use insulin efficiently while metformin hydrochloride, by decreasing sugar production and absorption and helping your body respond better to its own insulin.
Glipizide's popular brand is Glucotrol® by Pfizer while metformin hydrochloride is known as the brand Glucophage®, a product of Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Additionally, these two blood glucose-lowering ingredients are found in one product: Bristol-Myers Squibb's Metaglip™ Tablets.
Thanks to Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Metaglip™ now has a USFDA-approved generic counterpart.
