'Mr. Diabetes' Raises Awareness
Filed in archive Inspiration on July 28, 2006
How committed are you to educating, and helping, people with diabetes? Would you be willing to walk 7,300 miles for the cause?
That's exactly what Andy Mandell, known affectionately as 'Mr. Diabetes,' has done.
Andy Mandell has crisscrossed the country on foot, logging more than 7,300 miles since he began in 2002. His journey is not to raise money or set a world record; it's to increase awareness about the disease that caused him to almost lose his sight, the use of his legs, and his life.
Mandell, 61, said he doesn't expect researchers to find a cure for the disease anytime soon.
"It's time for people to take control of their own lives and not wait for people to come up with a solution," he said.
There is nothing more uplifting than to see someone take a personal, negative situation and turn it into something positive for everyone.
