Research shows people with diabetes who have poor blood sugar control get gum disease more often and more severely and they lose more teeth than do people with good control.
People whose diabetes is well-controlled, however, have no more periodontal disease than those without.
It's another good reason to see your dentist regularly.

I am not surprised either. My view is that sugar leads to gi=um disease.

If you have been told you have gum disease gingivitis or periodontitis make sure you do a search for LANAP. LANAP AKA Laser Assisted New Atachament Procedure has FDA clearence to reverse gum disease.
I have been a dentist for over 20+ years and am astounded by the results we have gotten. It is nice to be able to reverse the #1 cause of tooth loss in Adult Americans.
