Glycemic Control Within Reach For Most Children With Type 1 Diabetes
Filed in archive Research on August 29, 2006
No doubt, diabetes is a scary disease. Especially if it's happening to your child. But there is hope. Along with new research and developments that increase the opportunity for successful treatment every day, researchers now believe that most children with Type 1 diabetes can achieve healthy glycemic levels.
In clinical practice, more than two-thirds of children with type 1 diabetes who receive intensive treatment are able to attain glycemic targets in line with the diabetes control and Complications Trial (DCCT) recommendations, according to findings published in the August issue of the Journal of Pediatrics.
The primary cause for poor glycemic control was not based on any sort of genetics, but on socioeconomic status: children from impoverished families fared the worst. This is not surprising, as it is likely that these families do not have access to proper treatment or education.
Do everything you can to keep your child healthy, and take comfort in the fact that it does seem possible.
