Gladys C. Lester Dull: Oldest Living Diabetic
Filed in archive Inspiration , Notable on May 30, 2007
90-year-old Gladys C. Lester Dull is so far the longest-living person with diabetes to date. She has lived well with diabetes for the last 83 years.
Her story is included in the book 50 Secrets of the Longest Living People With Diabetes by Sheri R. Colberg and Steven V. Edelman.
Gladys was first treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where she was immediately admitted to the hospital for treatment with the newly available, Lilly-made insulin.
Imagine that?!
Gladys recalling her insulin shot eight decades ago:
"I remember the first shot I got and being scared of it. The needles back then were a lot more painful than they are now-and a lot more expensive.
My mother weighed everything out for me after that. She'd let me have one gram more than what I was supposed to have."
[Since she wasn't allowed to eat candy anymore, her grandfather used to buy her a newspaper to read (for the comics) instead, which almost made up for the one piece of candy she had previously gotten on weekly trips into town.]
83 years of diabetes and surviving it! Oh my God, this woman is amazing and has lived a much disciplined lifestyle to make her last with diabetes that long.
We should learn from her and be inspired.

How did she know Gladys is the oldest. Not to detract from Gladys, but this is not true! When I was a Geriatrics fellow in training, I had a 102 yo patient who was a type 1 diabetic! He was amazing and he had one of the discoverers of insulin as his doctor!

Mayo Clinic (whose website you even link to) is not in Rochester, NEW YORK. It's in Rochestr, Minnesota!
(I bet I'm not the only one who noticed this mistake.)
On a whim, I googled "oldest living diabetic" and came here. My sister has lived 52 years with diabetes - and is still going strong!

My congratlations and best wishes to all Type 1 brittle diabetics. How truly fortunate we are to have them with us. My mother, Ruby Schaeffer, is 83 years old now and was diagnosed as diabetic at the age of 5. She has successfully maintained her routine of insulin, careful eating and regular health care updates with her physicians. I am so proud of her and inspired by her spirit and faith. She also survived tuberculosis (as a teenager) and with my father raised three children and is the matriarch of eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is one of God's very special miracles.
