Gestational Diabetes in Moms and Risks in Their Born Babies

However, one consequence of having gestational diabetes is the risk of having babies that are born with excess insulin, low blood sugar and possible breathing problems and growth problems. These things could eventually trigger obesity and diabetes in the babies' early childhood.
I have a couple of girlfriends that got gestational diabetes in their pregnancies and it reminded me of how much I binged on most kinds of food when I was pregnant. I never had morning sickness, not once! So imagine eating and eating and eating. Besides, i was kind-a depressed...so i took it out on food. LOL!
Though I gained a lot of weight throughout my pregnancy (I maxed out the allowable pregnancy gain weight), fortunately I didn't have a brush with gestational diabetes. Fortunately! But trying and not succeeding to get rid of the excess pounds even four years later is the big price I have to pay. But that is another story...
Pregnant women should eat. In fact they should eat for two as much as they can, especially once the bouts of morning sickness have disappeared. BUT they should be careful of what they eat and how much they eat, not only for the nutritional values (for you and for your unborn child) but also to avoid gestational diabetes.
Read the ADA Resource Guide to find out more about gestational diabetes and its risks in both mother and baby.
