In Australia, excessive rainfall has unleashed bacteria that attacks weakened immune systems, such as those often found in diabetics.
The Northern Territory's Health Department is warning of an increased risk of the potentially life-threatening disease melioidosis after recent heavy rainfalls in the Top End.
The bacteria that causes the disease are found in soil in tropical areas and are often transferred through small cuts or sores on a person's hands or feet.
The disease can cause skin ulcers, fevers and headaches, and is treated with antibiotics.
The Centre for Disease Control spokeswoman Vicki Krause says melioidosis can be found in a number of areas in the Territory.
"It's really where there's the most rainfall for a long period of time and also the warm temperatures, so it's basically in the Top End, though we do get cases down to Katherine," she said.
No matter where you live in the world, you can never take too good care of yourself.
