Does Zyprexa Cause Diabetes?
Filed in archive News on June 30, 2006
At least one person thinks so. Penelope Rogers filed the lawsuit against Eli Lilly and Company on June 29, claiming that the powerful anti-psychotic drug led to the development of her diabetes.
Rogers says that after taking Zyprexa, she "was caused to suffer injuries and damages including, but not limited to, the onset of diabetes mellitus, physical pain and suffering, mental and emotional anguish and distress, and economic loss."
She also says she has suffered and will continue to suffer permanent injuries to her health, strength and activity as well as severe shock to her nervous system and mental pain.
I'm not sure how much of a case she'll have, since Zyprexa does offer a warning that the drug may lead to high blood sugar and diabetes.
What do you think? Is suing a drug company acceptable, or are patients responsible for the medicines they choose to take?

There is still no evidence that Zyprexa (or any other drug for that matter) actually CAUSES diabetes and as of yet there is not a single study looking specifically at the side effects of diabetes, ketoacidosis, or pancreatitis in patients taking Zyprexa that uses a double-blind technique with a placebo or traditional antipsychotic as a control. The studies showing higher rates of diabetes and pancreatitis were retrospective studies done without controls and often in populations which may have higher rates of diabetes and diabetic complications than the general population. In short, better studies are needed to investigate the real incidences and risks of these side effects but this has not stopped the lawyers and patients who have suffered from these complications from pointing fingers and seeking compensation.

I can say that I read that the warning label on the pill bottle is new. The FDA required it after thosands of people became diabetic after taking the medication. Numbers don't lie. The FDA made that warning for a reason.

I took zyprexa which was ineffective for my condition and gave me diabetes.
Zyprexa, which is used for the treatment of psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, accounted for 32% of Eli Lilly's $14.6 billion revenue last year.
Zyprexa is the product name for Olanzapine,it is Lilly's top selling drug.It was approved by the FDA in 1996 ,an 'atypical' antipsychotic a newer class of drugs without the motor side effects of the older Thorazine.Zyprexa has been linked to causing diabetes and pancreatitis.
Did you know that Lilly made nearly $3 billion last year on diabetic meds, Actos,Humulin and Byetta?
Yes! They sell a drug that can cause diabetes and then turn a profit on the drugs that treat the condition that they may have caused in the first place!
I was prescribed Zyprexa from 1996 until 2000.
In early 2000 i was shocked to have an A1C test result of 13.9 (normal is 4-6) I have no history of diabetes in my family.
