Diabetes Increases Risk of Death in ACS Patients
Filed in archive Notable , Research on August 15, 2007
Individuals with diabetes and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) - such as a heart attack or unstable angina - are at an increased risk of death compared to ACS patients without diabetes - thereby proving once more that diabetes aggravates one's cardiovascular health.
Such were the findings reported in the August 15 issue of JAMA (one of the JAMA and Archives Journal).
"The presence of elevated blood glucose levels, diabetes mellitus, or both contributes to more than 3 million cardiovascular deaths worldwide each year. With the increase in obesity, insulin resistance, and the Metabolic syndrome, the worldwide prevalence of diabetes is expected to double by the year 2030."
Diabetes and a cardiovascular condition is indeed double-trouble for any individual. People in this high-risk population should be closely monitored by a healthcare professional and the patient should religiously follow the doctor's advice.
