Diabetes Drug Does Double Duty
Filed in archive Research on November 15, 2006
Drugs used for treating diabetes are often interchanged to treat other conditions such as obesity. Now, it looks as though the condition known as 'fatty liver' can benefit from the diabetes drug Actos.
Early research shows the diabetes drug Actos may help treat nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, a common liver disease that currently has no drug treatment.
The results showed that, during the study, the Actos patients cut their liver fat by 54%; the placebo group had no change in liver fat.
Actos patients also showed a bigger drop in liver inflammation and a greater improvement in insulin response than the placebo group.
Interesting stuff. I believe that as we find out how more and more conditions are linked, we will make further progress in diabetes research.
