Depo Provera May Increase Diabetes Risk
Filed in archive News on March 22, 2006
Depo Provera, the birth control method that requires monthly injections, has often been the center of controversy. Many women have claimed that the medicine has caused them health problems, everything from seizures to infertility.
Now, there may be a new danger: studies have found that Depo Provera
may increase diabetes risk.
Years ago, my doctor recommended that I try Depo Provera. Luckily, I researched it and was horrified to discover the number of negative experiences.
This taught me that a doctor's word is not enough: we must follow our instincts and be responsible for our own health.
Have you had experiences with this birth control method, either positive or negative? Please let us know in the comments section.

I took Depoprovera for about 18 months. After I discontinued the drug, I did not have a period for almost a year. About the time my period finally kicked in, I started losing weight. About 5 months later I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

You can never be sure of these things, everything we do implies a certain risk. I suppose I would try something else to make sure I keep my heath at an acceptable level.

I was on Depo provera for 6 months i gained over 20 lbs.The weight didn't come slowly either I'd ain like 10 lbs in 3 days. After about a month after each shot I had gained about 12 lbs and wouldn't gain any more until rhe next shot.I decided that i couldn't do this I went from 108lbs to 130+.So I've been off for almost a month & haven't really lost any weight yet but hoping to.
Also on the shot i was extremely moody & emotional.I'd get so angry at little things & cry about evrything. But tht has started to subside.
I don't think depo is right for anyone!

if that is the case, then I guess it is safer to use the pill. but then the pill's side effects is another story.

I was on Depo about 10 years ago. I gained 30 lbs in 6 months. I had always been thin and exersized, so I couldn't understand how I had gained so much weight so fast. I stopped taking it and the weight did come off. About 3 years ago I was diagnosed wit type 2 diabetes. I have no family history and I have 0 risk according to the ADA website.

Do any of you ladies know of a class action suit against the makers of Depo Provera when it causes you to gain weight and become diabetic?
I was 17 when I took my first shot. When I was due for my third shot I had gained 70lbs. I immediately stopped taking it. I am now a full-blown type 1 diabetic from this shot.

I found out i have type II diabetes after using this medication. I had a perfect history of good sugar counts. My doctor also put me on this while having hypertension. He said this would be fine. I wish there was something i could do because I feel like he didn't know what he was talking about.

My daughter took this shot without my knowledge and asked me about it afterward. I read up on it and told her I did not think it was a good thing. She took it once but is now a type 1 diabetic. This cannot be a coincidence with all of these people having the same effect! What can we do?
