'Curing' Diabetes With Xenotransplantation
Filed in archive Research on July 30, 2006
Well, there's a mouthful! Scientists are looking at ways to reverse diabetic symptoms--perhaps even diabetes itself-- in patients through the use of xenotransplantation (basically, transferring animal cells into humans.)
The doctors' animal of choice? Pigs.
Through the use of animal-to-human transplants, Dr. White believes that there could be a viable means to treat an individual who suffers from Type II or Type I diabetes. This could be achieved through the use of pig cells.
Dr. White discusses the procedure involving pig cells and the favorable results that have been reached thus far.
You can listen to an audio version of the interview with Dr. White here.
