Child Obesity Must Be Challenged

It's a forbidden word, one often spoken in hushed tones: fat. But do we need to say it louder?
Many scientists think so, especially when it comes to our children. We can no longer ignore the implications of children being overweight, as childhood obesity is leading towards Type 2 diabetes at a frightening rate.
The condition was almost unheard of in children as recently as the 1980s. Now, new cases are being diagnosed by the thousands. The key to prevention and effective treatment is steering the entire family towards a healthier lifestyle.
A key ingredient in the treatment plan is the child's family, Hass said.
``Sometimes, families don't see anything wrong in being heavy, because they accept that heaviness runs in their families,'' Hass said. Most of the family members may be overweight, but have only one child who develops Type 2 diabetes, and that can make it particularly hard for the whole family to accept changes.
While adjusting to pediatric Type 2 diabetes is hard, it is also possible, Hass said.
``Families can do very, very well,'' she said. They can accept it, and go on to do a lovely job.''
