Makers of the controversial diabetes drug Avandia wants to improve on it with the use of plant-based extracts, especially from Cannabis Sativa.
From the UK Guardian:
Professor Mike Cawthorne led the team that developed GlaxoSmithKline's Avandia, which became the company's second-biggest selling drug until sales plunged in 2007 after a study linked it to a higher risk of heart attacks.
"I sincerely believe it is possible to improve on it (Avandia), and plant-based medicines could be one way to do that," he told Reuters in a telephone interview.
Cawthorne is collaborating with GW Pharma, a specialist developer of cannabis-based medicines, at a new laboratory dedicated to looking for plant-based treatments for diabetes.
Different cannabinoid molecules that have been found within the cannabis plant will be investigated to determine whether they can be used for diabetes treatment.

Why not Cannabis? It is natural, of the earth, as so many, many more true remedies are. Properly prescribed dosage, and supervision thereof could lead to something awesome, straight from God's earth again...

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and put on insulin about 8 years ago, I started using cannabis, and had to reduce the amount of insulin i was taking, I came of insulin and on to tablets and for the last 2 years have used nothing else but my own cannabis plants to control my diabetes and other problems i have, and then 4 weeks ago my medicine was taken from me by the police, and within a few days my blood sugars were back over 17 when normally when using cannabis they stay between 6.5 to 7.5, but the goverment takes profit over the health of its poeple.

We need more scientific, double blind studies to document efficacy of cannabis for diabetes so that doctors can legititimatly recommend MJ for patients.
