Arthritis Drug Salsalate Used To Treat Diabetes
Filed in archive Treatment on December 27, 2006
In yet another drug cross-over, the latest non-diabetes treatment for diabetes is an arthritis drug.
In previous studies, Shoelson and his team found inflammation -- an immune system response that normally fights infection and promotes healing -- plays a huge part in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Shoelson and his team were the first to demonstrate a major trigger of inflammation is activated by weight gain. That trigger is a protein in the liver called NF-kB. The next step? Finding a way to reduce inflammation by turning off the trigger.
Who knows what else can be utilized to fight diabetes?

It\'s good to see drug related news that focuses on something positive -- although we can\'t forget about the power that drug addiction has over the lives of so many Americans.

That is what is so insidious about prescription medications. Countless people start using them for totally legitimate purposes - then find themselves addicted (and even using other drugs) before they know it. In the words of that guy from Hill Street Blues, "Let's be careful out there."
