60,000 People In Ireland Are Diabetic...And Don't Know It
Filed in archive Research on October 24, 2006
Although we are (sadly) getting used to the idea of millions and millions of diabetes diagnoses popping up all over the world, it is still a shock to realize just how many people have developed the potentially life-threatening condition without realizing it. A recent study in Ireland found results that suggested at least 60,000 diabetic people in the country have no idea they've developed the disease.
Leading pharmacist Leonora O'Brien estimates on a national scale there are 60,000 undiagnosed cases.
This is on top of the 140,000 people already suffering from the diabetes.
Ms O'Brien, who ran the Kilbarrack screening initiative, said it was important to get an early diagnosis.
"This goes a long way towards preventing complications with their diabetes later in life."
It cannot be stressed enough: please diligently monitor your health.
